The Virtues of Vitamin C

It is hard to overstate the numerous benefits of Vitamin C bestows on us.

Did you know that Vitamin C is so essential to life that without it we die a horrible death by Scurvy?

Did you know that once upon a time, very long ago, our ancestors were manufacturing their Vitamin C in their liver? Just like all other mammalian species, with the current exception of the guinea pig, the gorilla and us of course.

It takes four enzymes for the liver to synthesize Vitamin C from glucose. We can only speculate on how we came to lose one of these enzymes (we still have the other three) and with it, the ability to manufacture our supplement of Vitamin C.

Maybe nature thought we needed a handicap, to level the playing field.

It did not stop us from becoming the dominant species on earth in spite of this daunting gap in our anabolic prowess.

Only in the past 75 years have we become aware of just how ubiquitous is the role of Vitamin C. It performs on average 5000 different chemical functions in our bodies every 24 hours.

Did you know that if you have a wound, it will heal twice as fast, if you maintain about 500 Mg of Vitamin C in your bloodstream? To do this you must take 1000 Mg of Vitamin C every 3 hours, preferably with food. So that would be 4 or 5 times a day.

Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen because without collagen we cannot make connective tissue required for the wound to heal.

And did you know that to keep your eyes in good health and hopefully at 20/20 vision, each eye needs 35 Mg of Vitamin C, every lifelong day?

You probably know that the misguided scientists, who work for government health bureaucracies (like the F.D.A. in the U.S. and the Codex Alimentarius in the E.U.) have set a limit (RDA = Recommended Daily Allowance) on your intake of Vitamin C, of 90 Mg per day. Take away the 70 Mg for your eyes (or 35 Mg if you are one-eyed) and you have 20 Mg left. You need the minimum 90 Mg to stop you from getting scurvy, meaning just to keep you alive.

Needless to say, your eyes are not going to be cared for at this rate, nor your brain, nervous system, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, immune system, circulatory systems, your glands and skin, your hair, nails, your bones and joints. All are going to survive in sub-optimal health, resulting in the early onset of age-related degenerative disease.

A dismal picture? You bet!! Yes, folks, Vitamin C is the numero uno salvation for your body.

Good scientists have discovered that your circulatory system alone needs between 2 – 5 grams of Vitamin C daily to keep it free of lesions. Lesions in the Arterial wall herald the beginning of Atherosclerosis and your eventual heart attack. Forget about cholesterol and saturated fats.
